Re: Dream length v realistic lengths
Sat, July 16, 2005 - 3:45 PMWell, I know from past experience (didn't cut my hair from age 14 to age 26) that at full length, my hair reaches to my sacrum. I've been growing it out again since 2001 and it reaches two-thirds the way down my back now.

Re: Dream length v realistic lengths
Sun, July 17, 2005 - 12:35 PMMy hair brushes the backs of my knees right now. Though my hair does seem to want to even-out at this length, I think that is more due to attrition then anything else.
My eventual goal is to grow it out to just-above my ankles. I'd rather not have to constantly have it "up" to avoid stepping on it, and I've largely mastered the art of not trodding upon it when I'm putting things on lower shelves at work while it is knee-length. Mostly, at least.
Since I managed to get knee-length hair without "trying" to grow my hair out, my goal feels pretty reasonable. Of course, this may be like trying to shave the last few seconds off your best track time... the last bit is often the most difficult. -

Re: Dream length v realistic lengths
Mon, July 18, 2005 - 12:48 AMThe ends get a little ragged, but I don't do anything in particular to "fight" them at all.
I periodically have about 2 inches trimmed off the very bottom when it starts to look ragged, but that is usually no more then once a year or so.
The only things I do to/with my hair:
- I condition the heck out of it, but just use the cheap "Herbal Essence" stuff I can buy in bulk at COSTCO.
- I soap the top of my head with shampoo but generally only rinse the soap through the length of my hair itself, since too much actual soap tends to do a number on it.
- I put it in a pony tail (bad bad, I know)... and I try not to step on it too often.
More expensive and arcane shampoos and frou frou things might help it be nicer. Generally, however, I am barely able to stay afloat in ultra-expensive Santa Cruz, so I don't sweat it. -

Re: Dream length v realistic lengths
Mon, July 18, 2005 - 8:09 PMhuh.. I get my shampoo in gallons, Nature's Gate and the conditioner I can't remeber the name of runs $6 /gal. use a ton. I "dust" the ends but am getting aggrivated with raggedyness. Guess I'll trim it after the concert season.
Pony tails are not bad-it's the elastics. -

Re: Dream length v realistic lengths
Thu, July 28, 2005 - 1:49 PMHi D,
Have you tried using warm oil treatments for the last several inches of your hair? Warm olive oil (or coconut oil, or almond oil) -- and some people put some honey in it, too -- can be worked in gently to the ends, wrapped in cling wrap and left that way for several hours or over night. (Cling wrap can also be used to keep you hands out of the way, if need be, while it's soaking in LOL.) This is supposed to reduce the amount of split ends, hence necessitating trims less often.

Thu, July 28, 2005 - 3:30 PMis that D to drummin or dalloftheabove?
I do use oils and a showercap.
NO honey as I'm working on being vegan. A shampoo sample I had with honey made my hair hideous. felt like straw.

Re: Dream length v realistic lengths
Sun, July 31, 2005 - 10:23 AMRoy,
I've heard about such things, but the jury seems to be out on how much is good for your hair, vs how often, how hot the oil is, and what ingredients can actually damage your hair MORE. As a result, I've largely been skittish about hot oil treatments.
Anyone here have direct experience regarding them? Brand recommendations, cautions or other things to report?

ways to use oil
Sat, October 8, 2005 - 1:16 AMI don't use hot oil, but I use oil. I shouldn't be surprised to find you here! I usually use a petroleum product free massage oil that doesn't have too much olive oil. I just don't like how sticky olive oil is. I personally prefer Coconut oil, jojoba oil, apricot oil, carrot oil, grapeseed oil, and some others.
My MO is to work it through all of my hair and braid it and leave it alone for a day or three before my next wash. And, as a bonus, if you take it out after a day and wear it loose it's very like... like this: www.hisashiotsuka.com/otsuka_...tumn.htm . I love his work, btw. I love when he paints women and kimonos, but I imagine his Kabuki and Ronin series might resonate for you also.
You've seen how shiny my hair is, I credit the oil treatments. I suppose it's a slow oil treatment rather than a hot oil treatment.
And I know a Bunch of long haired women (knee to ankle and beyond) who daily just work 1-3 drops btwn their palms and them smooth their hands through their hair, focussing mostly on the dryer ends. Favored oils for this technique are jojoba and coconut and shea butter.
was about to reply to your post, but decided to check your photos first. Quite a surprise to see someone I knew.

Re: ways to use oil
Sun, October 9, 2005 - 12:45 PMRosered,
Tribe has the delightful habit of running me into people I know already or helping me get to know acquaintances all over again. :-)
I haven't been very impressed with shampoo and other hair products with jojoba, but perhaps I will get better mileage out of the oil. I'm still grappling with damage from Burning Man (that alkali dust is brutal!) so I might end up trimming a few inches off a little early this year.
As far as photos go, I should be posted a whole mess of them shortly... I've been busy and have about 600 images to sort through in the meanwhile. :-)
Thanks again for the info! I'll take a bash at similar treatments once I get paid this month. ;-)
Cheerfully,
- D

if your hair is dry and damaged from Burning man I'd recommend the Coconut oil over the Jojoba. Though it sounds like a contradiction to say so many ppl tell me that the Jojoba is a rather drying oil.

Re: Dream length v realistic lengths
Sat, October 8, 2005 - 1:24 AMMy current length is about a handswidth below my butt.
My goal is to the back of my knee. I feel this is achievable. I've been working on it for a decade and only have a year or two to go.

Re: Dream length v realistic lengths
Fri, October 14, 2005 - 6:48 PMMy goal is my knees, but it is still currently at mid-butt level. I just had it trimmed, and she took 3 inches off (much needed but a bit shocking after not having it cut in 10 years). I think my goal is reasonable....I have never cut it short, and don't plan to, that's what wigs are for >grin<
I wash it no more than once a week and usually keep it up and/or braided (Always sleep with it braided)..... -

Re: Dream length v realistic lengths
Sun, January 15, 2006 - 6:53 AMCareful - now that mine has hit knee-length I've discovered that it is prime slam-it-in-car-door length! Ditto for the covetted "step on it while putting things on a low shelf at work" manuever. ;-)
Good luck! I've enjoyed your photos for quite a while and I am sure you'll look just as smashing with even longer hair. :-)
Cheerfully,

Re: Dream length v realistic lengths
Fri, July 14, 2006 - 10:32 AMMy hair is just a bit above my waist, so I don't tuck it into my pants all the time. I think its just right where it is, otherwise it would really get in the way of my job and hobbies. :) -

Re: Dream length v realistic lengths
Fri, July 14, 2006 - 11:25 AMAs much as I'd love to let mine reach my waist, I've found past about where its at gets too inconvienent - the ends tend to get ratty and uneven from constantly getting stuck in the car sunroof or tangled up in my daypack, plus its more of a hassel to wash regularly.... -
-
Re: Dream length v realistic lengths
Sat, July 15, 2006 - 9:11 PMI'm going to admit that I wash mine every day. I'm a natural blonde with very fine hair, so its lightweight, and easy to wash. Plus its naturally wavy, so if I don't put a bit of gel in it, it gets very frizzy. But with the gel, it looks like a salon spiral perm and I get alot of compliments on it. I get funny looks though, when someone asks me where I get my hair done, and I tell them that I'm just lucky because its what God gave me. :) Very lucky, since I'm allergic to something in hair color and perms.
The longest I've ever had it was below my butt, but then it did look a little ratty. If I get mine trimmed every few months, it stays nice-looking and healthy. -

Re: Dream length v realistic lengths
Fri, November 30, 2007 - 9:07 AMDream length is just below my ass...I don't know if this is reasonable or not--I started growing it out from sort of below breast-length in January, and now it's almost at upper-hip length. I've been using Jojoba religiously, wash it every other day, but I always wear it down, which probably isn't the best thing for it, I'm guessing, so it's pretty frayed at the ends. I hope my dream is realistic! -
-
Re: Dream length v realistic lengths
Sun, December 23, 2007 - 1:42 AMDream length=Below ass
Actual length= Upper Hip
Realistic= I'd be happy if my mane of black hair looked fuller near the last few inches...the underside is quite thin and drives me nuts...seems realistic
I stopped blow-drying about a year ago, and only flat-iron every few months....that makes ALL the difference in reducing split ends...and i don't "over-wash" or wear it loose much anymore -

Re: Dream length v realistic lengths
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 6:14 PMDream length: tops of my thighs
Actual length: lower mid back
Realistic: waist

Re: Dream length v realistic lengths
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 8:52 AMSadly my dream length is dependent on my hair actually picking a color naturally.
My hair will never be longer then what I can dye.
Longest my hair got was mid back (it got caught in car doors so that was an end to that)
Dream length = mid thigh
Dream color = raven black (it was dirty blond, it is dyed red/brown)
Reasonable = just past shoulders (for my work this *is* considered "long")
